I was recently given a presentation on building apps for Windows 8 & Windows Phone 8 using a ZipApp.co.uk, so I thought I’d share some info on it here.
ZipApp allows you to build a very basic app online. It requires no development experience so is extremely useful in that sense. If you are looking to build a very basic app and want to do it as quickly as possible then it is a great starting point. On the flip side there is only so much you can achieve without some development knowledge so functionality is very limited.
The first step is to register with ZipApp here
Once you have done that you can immediately jump into developing you app by clicking “Create App”, selecting your name, icon and theme.
If you are building an app you should have a plan on how you want your app laid out (and if you don’t you should). So, an important point to note here is that you can not change the order of your pages in ZipApp at this time. This functionality may be implemented at a later date, but for now it is very important that you create your pages in the order you want them to appear ie create the home page first
At the moment ZipApp allows you to add a few different content types. These are feeds for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and RSS. It also allows you to add static pages and articles.
For example I will add my RSS feed to my ThomasGeraghty app by simply by pasting in my rss link. I then name my page using the advanced options.
You can very simply add Facebook and Youtube feeds using the page names, and Twitter feeds can be set up by user name or by hashtag.
Once your app is completed it is just an option of selecting Download app from your app homepage and selecting either “Store” or “Phone” app. I will get into more detail on downloading your app, making modifications and uploading to the store at a later date.
